CamGraPhIC develops graphene-based photonic transceivers for data-centre interconnects, including links between GPUs and high-bandwidth memory.
CamGraPhIC is the non-silicon bet in optical interconnect and now the largest single public investment behind one. On 2026-04-16 the European Commission approved a EUR 211m Italian state-aid direct grant, described by co-founder Professor Andrea Ferrari as the largest single grant ever made to a University of Cambridge spin-out. The technical claim: graphene-based transceivers consuming up to 80 percent less energy than conventional pluggable data-centre optics, with higher bandwidth density and lower latency, suited to GPU-to-HBM transfers, operating across a broad temperature range without the complex cooling silicon photonics needs, and cheaper to manufacture. None of it ships: the pilot line near Milan is scheduled operational in 2028 with more than 150 jobs. Co-founded by Ferrari (Cambridge Graphene Centre) and Dr Marco Romagnoli (formerly of Italy's CNIT). Direct peer of Black Semiconductor, already in the registry on the same graphene thesis. It is a 2D Photonics Group subsidiary, but the grant went to CamGraPhIC directly and the technology sits there, so a standalone row with the parent named is the right treatment.
