Positioning

Poolside sells AI coding automation to enterprises with 5,000 or more developers, including banks and defence contractors, on a model that is the opposite of generic API access: for each customer it spins up a dedicated training environment inside the client own infrastructure, ingests their codebase and development history, and fine-tunes a model that stays behind their security boundary. AWS Bedrock provides a managed alternative. Behind that sits an AGI ambition and, until April 2026, a vertical-integration bet, and the record is now dominated by the unwinding of that bet. In October 2025 Poolside announced Project Horizon, a 2 gigawatt AI campus on 568 acres in West Texas, with CoreWeave as anchor tenant on a 15-year lease for the first 250 MW plus an option on 500 MW more, contracted to deliver over 40,000 NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 GPUs from December 2025. Simultaneously it was raising a USD 2 billion Series C at a USD 14 billion pre-money valuation with NVentures slated to anchor up to USD 1 billion. By 2026-04-02 both collapsed: CoreWeave exited citing an USD 8.5 billion loan facility enabling flexible multi-partner leasing, and the Financial Times reported the round had fallen apart on investor concerns that Poolside could not train frontier-competitive models against Anthropic, OpenAI and Google DeepMind. Momentum scores 1 accordingly.
