SIAE Microelettronica is a microwave and millimeter-wave backhaul equipment maker founded in 1952, supplying licensed and unlicensed radios from 4 GHz to 80 GHz including E-band, with optical transport through its subsidiary SM Optics. Its space-adjacent activity is a research programme rather than a product line: on 2025-09-22 it announced a collaboration with Qorvo to build a Ka-band phased antenna array for satellite communications inside the EU SHIFT programme funded by the Chips Joint Undertaking, using Qorvo beamformer integrated circuits, targeting a functional system demonstrator within the SHIFT timeframe and use cases including satellite-to-satellite links. This sits against a three-year financial collapse: a concordato in bianco filing on 2025-12-23 and admission of both SIAE Microelettronica S.p.A. and SM Optics S.r.l. to Amministrazione Straordinaria under the Marzano law by ministerial decree of 2026-05-13.
