Positioning

Verne launched what it and the trade press call Europe first commercial robotaxi service, in Zagreb on 2026-04-08, with members of the public booking and paying through the Verne app and Uber integration to follow. The uncomfortable detail for a European champion narrative is that almost nothing in the service is European: the vehicles are 10 Arcfox Alpha T5 units built by China BAIC, and the autonomy is the Pony.ai seventh-generation system, after Verne dropped Mobileye ahead of launch. Safety operators remain on board. The operating zone is roughly 91 square kilometres of Zagreb plus the international airport, at a flat introductory fare of EUR 1.99 per trip. Verne own contribution is the fleet ownership and operation, the app, the back-end infrastructure including cleaning and maintenance through a facility it calls the Mothership, and a purpose-built two-seat robotaxi with no steering wheel or pedals that it has not yet launched: 60 verification prototypes had been produced and tested as of November 2025, with the Lucko factory expected to begin production. Technology scores 2 because Verne develops no self-driving system. The open question is whether a European operator renting a Chinese stack can build durable position, and whether the Croatian two-seater ever ships.
